About this calculator

The Stock Return Calculator estimates how a past investment in a major US stock would have grown. Pick an S&P 500 company, choose how long ago you invested, and the tool applies the change in share price over that period. Model a one-time lump sum or a recurring plan — investing a fixed amount every month, quarter, or year.

Returns are based on price change only (capital gain) using approximate, split-adjusted year-end reference prices; they do not include dividends, taxes, or commissions. Treat the result as an educational estimate of historical performance, not a forecast.

Frequently asked questions

Are the prices split-adjusted?

Yes. Values are split-adjusted (e.g. Apple's 4:1 in 2020, Amazon's and Alphabet's 20:1 in 2022, Nvidia's 10:1 in 2024) so returns across years are consistent. They are approximate, not official exchange data.

Does it include dividends?

No. The calculator shows price return only. A real total return would add reinvested dividends, which for dividend-paying stocks can be significant over long horizons.

Is this investment advice?

No. It is an educational tool illustrating past price movements, not a recommendation. Past performance does not predict future returns.
